Earlier today, an asteroid entered the Earth’s atmosphere and burnt up over the Sudan. It was merely two meters across, but still, cool stuff. Apparently it was detected only yesterday (!). Let’s hope they manage to catch the bigger ones sooner.
Here’s a blog item about it.

Here’s NASA’s notice about the event, with some nice images.
They say that objects this size bombard us every few months, “but this is the first time such an event has been predicted ahead of time.”

The above item about the asteroid burning up above the Sudan has turned out to be quite a popular subject.
Normally I have less than 20 hits a day on my blog — I know, not very much, but still something. The same day that I posted the item above, I got over 300 hits (!) on my blog, and the same amount the day after. Amazing.
It’s back to normal again, but all the stats and averages are totally messed up.
